Its amazing really that a site that has now been around for 3 years can still have so many people baffled as to what it is! However Twitter is one of those social networking sites that still has people scratching their heads, when in fact it not only is a very powerful social media site, but also one of the simplest.
Twitter, created in 2006 by a gentleman by the name of Jack Dorsey, is a popular and free social networking site and micro blogging service that enables its users to send and receive messages that are known as tweets. However there is one catch, all messages must be within 140 characters, the same number of characters as a text message.
Every time that a twitter member tweets their status ,the 140 character message is not only displayed on their profile page but also delivered to all other twitter members that are subscribed to that members channel. These are known as followers.
Since 2007 when Twitter really started to kick off there have been multiple other sites & applications that have been created that run alongside Twitter, for example twitpic.com & yfrog.com which enable you to upload pictures to your twitter account for an even more interactive social experience.
There are millions of people worldwide now with twitter accounts, and it is one of the few social media platforms that is not just being used by the "Average Joe", but also has massive usage from celebrities and public figures. It enables them to interact with their fans on a very personal level, though still keeping their fans at safe distance. With Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres & Britney Spears the top 3 tweeters with over 3 million followers each! Pretty impressive I am sure you'll agree.
Since its launch in 2006 Twitter has now found its way into the top 50 websites worldwide, in accordance with Alexa's web traffic analysis, with a whopping monthly growth of 1,382 percent. If that doesn't show you just how popular and powerful this social media site is I don't know what could!
There are currently approx 8 million Tweeters on Twitter with an estimated 12 million followers by the end of the year, so if so many millions are logging on.. it really cant be the difficult, right?!
