Side affects of Clinical Obesity can be fatal. Some of the mechanical disabilities associated with obesity are flat feet, osteoarthritis of the knees, hips, and lumbar spine, respiratory infections, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia (high fat content of the blood), hypertension, heart disease, stroke, certain types of cancer, and increased rate of mortality.
Growing up my Grandmother was obese and suffered from problems ranging from fatigue to low potassium. When I was young she would always try to create time for me and she would take me shopping. We would frequently have to stop and rest because she would tire easilly, have trouble breathing and her knees would hurt.
As an adult I have seen her develop diabetes, chronic illness, several types of arthritis, and hypertension. She has also undergone multiple surgeries having both of her knees replaced and has had several of her toes removed as a result of excessive weight and diabetes.
According to NHANES III," the trend in the prevalence of obesity is upward. The guidelines note that from 1960 to 1994 the prevalence of obesity in adults increased from nearly 13 % to 22% of the U.S. population, with most of the increase occurring in the 1990's."
In July 2004 USA Today published an article titled "Medicare redefines obesity as medical". It says that "More than 60% of American's are overweight, and about 30% are obese. It is also believed responsible for about 300,000 deaths a year."
In the last few years, with the support of nutritionists' and family, my grandmother has lost quite a bit of weight and has been able to control her diabetes with her new diet. She also exhibits signs of increased energy, a more positive attitude, is not in chronic pain in her muscles and joints, and says that her quality of lifeis vastly improved.
I understand that there are many causes to obesity, some being thyroid disorders and genetics can play a part. Regardless of genetic or physiologic challenges, it's important to work with a professional to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, eating in moderation, combined with a consistent exercise program to help develop and maintain good health and a positive attitude.
