To become a top tennis coach will take years of dedication and commitment but, how do you start on the tennis coaching ladder?
To begin, i would advise visiting the LTA website for guidance. It is assumed you are already a keen tennis player and also a member of a tennis club. I would also suggest, that if you club already has an associated professional, approach him/her and ask what would be the best way in which you are able to help. They will usually suggest you help out with the junior coaching sessions but, before you can do that there are a few things you will need to complete
1. A satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau check. (CRB)
2. Have a valid 'Emergency First Aid at Work' certificate.
3. Complete a level one or assistants coaching course.
4. Registar at the LTA, so you are insured and a member.
You would be well served by attending child welfare and well being course.
You will be able to become an assistant coach after the first tennis coaching course. The first tennis coaching course is usually held over three days. After the second day, you will be required to complete a minimum of 3 hours assisted coaching. Following the assisted coaching you can complete the final day of the course about 3 to 6 weeks later. All candidates must be over 16 of years of age, on the first day of the course. To get the available dates of a course in your area, contact your local county website.
Having decided that you would like to start coaching tennis, what will this course teach you? Upon completion, you will be able to:-
Communicate effectively
Motivate and inspire people to play tennis
plan and deliver a structured lesson.
Have basic knowledge of tennis tactics.
Have basic knowledge on the rules of tennis.
Understand the structure of Mini Tennis
Organise tennis activities safely and constructively
Coaching course expenses will often be paid by the club but, sometimes they will only pay half the cost until you demonstrate that it will benefit the club. The cost of this level 1 course is 200. The other courses (listed above) will cost between 15 and 30 each.
After the level 1 course has been completed and if you wish to improve you tennis qualification, you will need to successfully attend a level 2 coaches assistants course.
