subject: Committed to Your Goals [print this page] Committed to Your Goals Committed to Your Goals
The situation I am in now is both liberating and frightening. I suffered, and perhaps still do, from an issue that is as common as it is deadly. I had profound commitment issues. No, I'm not referring to social or relationship issues, I'm talking about career issues. A simple way to break this down is by listing four general categories of people who need to work for their money.
The first is the kind of person who knows what he wants, whether he wanted to be a doctor from when he was a little boy or even if he decided to study medicine as a teenager or young adult, the bottom line is that he knows what he wants and he is committed. The second person is the exact opposite; he would be committed, he just doesn't know what he wants. This is the kind of person who bounces from job to job or simply gets stuck in a particular job because he does not know were ha wants to end up in the long run. Then there is the person who simply doesn't care, he does not even fully except the reality of the fact that he needs to work to begin with. He does not like any job he has and the thought of a career has no appeal to him at all. Then there is me, I'm the kind of person who loves the sound of so many different jobs and has so many hobbies that although occupy my time, prevent me from ever attaining mastery at anything and am in a limbo in life.
This problem of mine has delayed me from doing anything I truly enjoyed for so many years. It had literally made me delay my life and postpone not only a career that would be more profitable for me, but it had detracted from my happiness.
So why do I feel liberated? Because I have come to realize that this plague of hopefulness and eclectic interest in almost every subject is simply, at its core, a commitment issue. I lack the ability to remain focused on one goal, and channel all of my mind and talent in a single direction. I am scared to be defined in a single way, I have a childish fantasy to remain a mystery and a person in potential not just to my friends and family but more importantly, to myself! I am a vacant mannequin, an empty dress form. A weak and say creation.
I feel the pain and full weight of this realization and it breaks me down to my essence. This is frightening but it is also liberating. Because now that I know and have defined my most compromising weakness, and it had taken a long time to get to this place, I also know what y task is and can see in vivid detail the narrow paths and towering mountains I must surpass.
This is life, and the sooner you realize this in whatever way it pertains to you, the better off you will be. Much luck.
