Renewable Heat Tariffs - Green Deal
Renewable Heat Tariffs - Green Deal

The UK government's scheme to improve heating and insulation in Britain's housing stock, and commercial buildings used for business, will also include the added benefits of the use of renewable technology.

The newly announced Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) includes tariffs available under the scheme. The social housing sector including Housing Associations will also be interested in the scheme, as grants will be made available for some renewable equipment and materials. Businesses and homeowners will be encouraged to adopt some form of green alternative energy which can also help to reduce energy utility bills and reduce carbon emissions. The government is also keen to improve the carbon footprint of homes and commercial buildings to meet it's EU targets.

If grant assistance is provided for green energy, when the green deal is officially launched in 2012. Solar companies will certainly welcome the scheme, especially after the recent announcement of cuts to the Feed In Tariff scheme for net exporters of electricity to the grid. Under the plan, the government is considering the use of Solar Panels employing photovoltaic (PV) technology for electricity generation, solar thermal hot water systems, Heat Pumps for both air and ground source, wind turbines and Biomass Boilers which can be used for home domestic heating.

Repayment proposals are currently being considered, however, the plan is that Green Deal providers will consider the package of improvement measures and provide an offer which stipulates the total cost of the work, the charge for the work carried out will be attached to the "owners" energy meter for the property, together with the length of the repayment period. This should be in line with the recommendations provided by the qualified Green Deal adviser, and only approved home or business efficiency improvement measures installed by qualified Green Deal installers will be eligible for finance under the scheme. The great advantage is that, as an owner of the property there would be no need to find the capital upfront to pay for the improvements.

Applications must meet specific criteria to be eligible under the scheme. Further details about the Renewable Heat Incentive Tariffs can be found at www.greendealadvisersuk.com Green Deal website for providers.
