The show was replaced by Mercy, a medical drama, on the fall 2009 schedule. Subsequently, on September 10, 2009, a spokesperson for Tierney announced that she was leaving the show due to conflicts with her treatment schedule. Tierney's already-filmed scenes were deleted. On October 9, 2009, it was announced that Lauren Graham would replace Tierney in the upcoming series.

Parenthood was expected to premiere March 1, 2010, and air on Monday nights at 9:00 p.m. However, after the cancellation of The Jay Leno Show, NBC moved the premiere to March 2, 2010, at 10:00 p.m. The series premiere of Parenthood was dedicated to the memory of Nora O'Brien, a Vice President at NBC, who died at age 44 on April 29, 2009 after collapsing due to an aneurysm on the set of Parenthood in Berkeley, California. Two other shows, Warehouse 13 and Sanctuary, are also dedicated to her memory.

So their discussion with Max leads Adam and Kristina to a visit with Dr. Pelickan (Tom Amandes, "Everwood") for advice, who gives them the "Qualities and Difficulties" assignment. Kristina is open to trying out this blueprint, which will help them talk to Max about his diagnosis, but Adam is understandably frustrated with this polished script. Max however, doesn't have any questions or concerns about the syndrome. It is so amazing how far parents will go for something their child doesn't give too much thought about.

Still wanting Max to not feel so alone, Adam encourages Max to go an amusement park instead of following his regularly scheduled Thursday activities at school and it works! That is until technical difficulties cause their favorite ride to get shut down. This scene might make a few people reconsider their judgmental stares the next time a child acts out in public. On the other hand, it is nice to see Adam encouraging Max to try new things instead of taking zero risks like Kristina.

She is given the advice to not take on the task of manager, at which she leaves with what seems to be mixed feelings. She understands that she cannot afford to be manager, but maybe part of her still wants to take on a new challenge. There's nothing wrong with taking on new challenges, but Sarah definitely needs to make a financial plan and stick with it for some time before she jumps into making any major changes, like putting on a production of the play she has written. Sarah might be able to write Act 2 before Act 1 is fully edited but she can't skip over parts of her life in the real world.

But Adam goes into a tirade about how selfish Crosby is and this doesn't do anything for the relationship between the two brothers. Being brothers, Adam should know by now in life what he will get with Crosby and should accept Crosby for who he is while also hiring a new tutor for Max. Adam definitely has a reason to be upset but going into a tirade doesn't solve his problems.

The next day, he pulls Jasmine out of work. That wasn't very smart, as Jasmine points out when she says she never wants to see him come around her work place again. It is so nice to see the writers pointing out how many boundaries Crosby doesn't know are there as a new father and as a brother in adulthood. It is a breath of fresh air to see an adult in TV making so many obvious mistakes and then trying to make amends for them, whether or not he fully understands his own mishaps and faults. Unfortunately, the rejection that he faces causes Crosby to drown his sorrows away with music and booze on his boat with leads up to being bailed out of jail by dad, Zeek.
