Why Use Notice Boards In The Classroom?

Notice boards, blackboards and whiteboards have been part of a learning environment for years and years. From stern looking teachers in tweed jackets right through to the modern day, they are great for helping kids learn. By why do they work so well?

Firstly, notice boards create a focal point in the classroom for the kids. Their attention can point towards the board and therefore the teacher if he or she is standing in front of it. By writing down notes and pointers as the class is taught, the teacher can help students who are struggling to keep up and to identify important points that may be difficult to grasp.

A blackboard or whiteboard can also greatly benefit students who are visual learners. This means that they take information in best when it is written in front of them or they have seen the concept illustrated. So by writing notes or highlighting the most important parts of the lesson on the notice board, you are helping these learners get the most from the lesson.

For younger children, displaying their most recent projects on a notice board can greatly boost their self-esteem and also create a feeling of working together when they see what the class has produced as a whole. Changing the display regularly to update their work create a positive and creative environment in the classroom.

A display board for younger kids can also be great when studying new topics. To encourage learning you can make a display related to the project for example a Medieval board or a seasons board would be a great idea.

In addition to this, we all know that children have more important things to remember than their PE kit, deadlines and lesson changes so having a prominent reminders board can give them that nudge that they need to remember. Then they won't have an excuse to say no one told them they had to!

Finally, modern day classrooms can feature interactive whiteboards that not only project a screen from your computer in front of the class, but allow teachers and students to play educational games and use the screen as if actually on the computer itself. This makes learning different and more fun.
