Everyone knows the words to Abba's "Dancing Queen." Since I only work to music and it's Abba day on a local radio station, I couldn't help but think about how Twitter is "The Dancing Queen."
"You're a teaser, you turn 'em on, Leave them burning and then you're gone... You're in the mood for dance and when you get the chance, you are the dancing queen..."
Since its debut slightly more than 4 years ago, Twitter has become the belle of the ball.
As an in-house corporate micro-blogging platform, Twitter has earned star quality. The paparazzi know it. So do internet marketers.
While it is referred to as a social networking site, its applications are not purely social, at least not anymore.
Twitter expects to exceed 1 billion users in short time. This growth process presents new and exciting online marketing opportunities.
Evan Williams, company founder, takes it all in stride, no two-stepping around it. When asked what he thought about archenemy Facebook's target for the same user figure, Williams confidently declared, "Twitter will get to a billion members." Williams can tango.
Market researchers believe that Twitter has a real chance of meeting that target. Shortly after the company launch, it reached 200 millions users without breaking a sweat.
It is presently estimated that about 100 million tweets are generated daily.
Greg Sterling, a San Francisco based consultant, advices the Bloomberg press that Twitter will continue to grow as more and more business realize the market promotion strategies that are possible on Twitter.
"They certainly have defied expectations," Sterling said. "A lot of people saw them purely as a niche service or dismissed their capacity to have global reach. It's within the realm of possibility that they will get to a billion users."
International corporations are diggin' the beat, even those which did not give social media serious regard in the recent past. Major corporate brands have engaged trial marketing campaigns on Twitter in recent days. This is a new phenomenon. Two known corporate big names recently test-marketed Twitter, placing display ads next to search results and getting placement with popular topics and trends. They were happy they joined the party.
These corporate strategies have all yielded unmitigated success. Brad Burton, managing director at 4Networking, explains: "Think of it like a conversation that is going to happen, whether you are there or not."
Internet marketers have a remarkable opportunity, unprecedented in history, to get on Twitter's dance card.
Rock out with the dancing queen.
As Burton says, it is going to happen, even if you are not present. But of course, as an internet marketer you will be. Present and accounted for.
