Men, women and teens all over the world feel the peer pressure and commence smoking. Later on, they realize how debilitating this habit is and desire to give it up all together. Once you have embroiled yourself in this habit, quitting smoking does not come easily. What once you may have seen as something cool, later on became disgusting to you and those around you. For instance, you may be wheezing and hacking, your breath, fingers, clothes and hair smell of cigarette smoke. Exercise routines such as jogging and running will begin to make you tired. The stamina you once had has reduced considerably. This obviously does not describe a cool person. While you may fully realize the signs of smoking, quitting smoking does not happen overnight.

During this incessant habit, your physician may have advised you to quit smoking while still ahead. Your family and friends may have advised you to give up this habit, as well. There is good reason for all this advice. The lifespan of a mature smoke will decrease considerably. Smoking causes cancer directly, and up to 90% of deaths reported are the result of lung cancer. About 80% of deaths caused by chronic bronchitis are also directly linked to cancer. Cancer shortens your longevity considerably. Unless you pay attention to these statistics, you are certainly not heading in the right direction.

Some smokers find quitting smoking a difficult path to travel; their journey towards achieving this goal becomes a trying one. There are many ways of quitting smoking out there. All these methods are successful only if you commit your mind to making the required effort. You must truly believe that cigarettes will only harm you, instead of heal you. Smoking even one cigarette will only pave the way to destructive behaviour. Ensure you throw away your cigarettes first, when embarking on this journey. This is a mental challenge you will have to face. The temptation can be great, remember, your will be power can be greater!

The first few days of your journey of quitting smoking will be the hardest. This is when you will experience severe withdrawal symptoms. This is also the time when many smokers give up and revert to their habit, as the temptation faced is monumental. You have to prepare yourself for this difficult challenge ahead. Always keep your mind fixed on the prize. Think positive thoughts of health benefits and overall benefits you will achieve by quitting smoking. After the first few days, you will soon begin to feel better. Your lungs will clear up, your sense of taste and smell will resume to being normal, and people around you will begin to appreciate you more, at the stance you are taking.

While you may be victorious at the completion of your journey, it is best to remember that the temptation to smoke is always present. Certain situations in your life may very well trigger your habit into existence, such as work stress, breakup of a friendship and marital problems. Learn to handle life's stresses as and when they come into your life. Once you have quit smoking, focus on staying the path irrelevant of what happens around you.
