Older Drivers

The older driving debate is a sensitive topic for most, as people worry how they would broach the subject with their parents and loved ones. As you get older you eye sight begins to deteriorate in most cases, you often become more nervous and you are less likely to drive at the correct speed limit, causing other people to have accidents. Other drivers are nervous around older drivers as they feel they do not take due care and attention when on the roads, and are more likely to misgauge situations and pull out in front of them. But if new research is anything to go by then as many as eighty percent of drivers over the age of seventy welcome the idea of a refresher course to make sure that they are still capable of driving to the standard of everyone else on the road.

Of the people polled, the drivers felt that they would like refreshers on parts of the driving process like driving in the dark, winter weather driving, and help with their confidence on the motorways. Drivers in Scotland were also open to the ideas of a medical at the age of seventy to make sure they were still healthy enough to drive. The introduction of this sort of course would help to reduce their Car Insurance premiums too, as they tend to get higher the older a driver gets. The idea is sort of like the pass plus idea for new drivers, and is a great idea in preventing road traffic accidents and enabling all of us to feel safe on the roads.

Most older drivers were mostly concerned with the idea of other people driving without insurance, tax or due car and attention, rather than questioning their own ability. A lot of the drivers asked were worried about drivers under the influence of drink or drugs, and some were concerned about getting into an accident with someone who was on their mobile phone and therefore distracted.

This is a great idea, as lots of younger drivers are increasingly worried about nervous drivers on the roads causing accidents, and it is well documented that as you get older you lose concentration.
