Silicone adaptability spurs timepiece diversity

Straps, bezels and cases come in a range of colors, contours and textures.

China watchmakers are leveraging silicone's durability and versatility to come up with promotional, sports and fashion models.

The material, which is used for the case, strap and bezel, is soft, flexible and water-resistant. It can endure high temperatures without becoming distorted or brittle. Moreover, the hypoallergenic input can be dyed into any color. Opaque and translucent finishes are available.

For premiums, designs are mostly in bangle form. They are molded in one step, thereby reducing costs. After this procedure, the movement, dial and crystal are inserted. Since there is no buckle closure, suppliers offer several sizes for a single style.

Logos can be printed, embossed or debossed. In the last option, recessed areas may be filled with a contrasting shade.

The components for sports and fashion timepieces are often separately fabricated then assembled. This allows for diversity in terms of shape and hue.

For example, a square case can have flat straps. Some bezels feature concentric circles or are contoured like a flower.

One disadvantage of silicone is that it creates a casual look. This limits a company's ability to command high prices. Although quotes may exceed $2.50 per piece, the majority of export models are below $1 each.

To add value, manufacturers are launching variants that can emit anions. Such styles are said to improve health by relieving body tension, promoting sleep, enhancing concentration and energy, and stimulating the immune system, blood circulation and metabolism. Between 1,700 and 1,900 particles are released per cubic centimeter. The feature boosts price by 10 percent.

Roughly 70 percent of the cost of a China-made silicone watch is from the movement or module. The case and strap account for 15 percent. The rest is for other parts, packaging, labor, transportation and utilities.

Topping out at $1, low-end models have silicone cases and bands formed in one step. The case diameter varies from 14 to 22mm. They are fitted with a QA movement or digital module that can tell the day and date. The battery lasts for a year and the water resistance rating does not go beyond 3ATM. A polybag, plastic tube or blister card is used for packaging.
