Let your bulldog know that you're the boss. English bulldogs are a strong, dominating breed. Owners must quickly establish through training and close supervision who is master in this relationship. Use a strong, loud voice when giving your bulldog commands or telling him "no" if he engages in bad behavior. Take the lead when walking in and out of doors and make sure that the dog follows you, to let him know you are in charge.
Recognize that the bulldog needs lots of attention and love. Take your bulldog for a short walk every day. In the house, bulldogs like to be where the action is. They are often underfoot. Let the dog sit with you, pet him often, and even rest on your lap, as long as his weight isn't too much of a strain on your own body.
Understand the dog's health restrictions. The bulldog's short nose creates airway obstruction problems and breathing is easily compromised. Don't take him for a walk or keep him outdoors in hot weather. Even in cooler temperatures, don't take him for extended walks. Heavy breathing and drooling will get the best of the bulldog and you'll both end up stranded, your bulldog unable to move and you unable to move him.
Keep the bulldog's facial folds clean. Those folds are adorable but they also get dirty, like rolls of fat on a baby's neck. You can purchase wipes for dogs at your pet store or use whatever you have at home to get between the folds and get him clean. The cleaner he is, the better he'll feel and the better his behavior will be.
