Home made treatment for chronic sciatica

Sciatica pain can be termed as chronic when the person concerned has been suffering from it for some months without much progress with regard to relief. The pain generally occurs when the sciatic nerve, which starts in the lumbar region of the back, gets compressed or injured. This could happen on account of a herniated disc, or spinal stenosis, or tightening of thigh muscles or degenerative disc disease. If it is not treated initially, the pain may continue into months, and become chronic.

A chronic sciatica sufferer can still hope to regain his/her normal state by performing moderate exercises, as prescribed for such cases. All the exercises pertaining to sciatica are moderate exercises, keeping in mind the pain being undergone. All of them involve some form of stretching or bending in order to relax the pressure on the sciatic nerve. However, they need to be done correctly, initially perhaps under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Some simple exercises which can be tried out with advantage are as below;

1. Sit on the floor, with the good leg stretched out before you. Lift the ankle of the affected leg with your arms and bring it as close up to your chest as possible. Hold this position for 5 seconds, and repeat 5 times. This stretches the muscles in the thigh and buttocks.

2. Lie on the prone position on the floor (i.e., flat on your stomach). Try to slowly raise the upper part of your body by taking the help of your elbows arms. i.e., the upper part of the body is in a way propped up on the elbows. Hold the position for 15 seconds, before returning to original and starting again. This stretches the back muscles and needs to be done 10 times.

3. Sit again on the floor, this time stretch out both legs before you. Slowly bend at the waist and try to touch your toes with your arms, keeping your knees straight. Hold this position for 10 seconds, and repeat 10 times.

4. Lie on your back. Tighten the abdominal muscles, and slowly raise one leg straight up, about 8" off the floor keeping the lower back firmly in contact with the floor. Hold this position for 10 seconds, go back to the starting position, and repeat the exercise 10 times preferably 2 setsof 10 times per day.

5. Immerse the lower part of the body upto the waist in warm water for 15-20 minutes per day. This will help loosen any tightened muscles of the lower back, thighs and buttocks. Thereafter, arrange for massage of lower back with any ointment containing methyl salicylate.

Apart from exercises, inclusion of Vitamin B1 in the diet will help to soothe the nerves. This can be taken either in supplement form, or from natural sources such as green peas, lentils, nuts and beans and green leafy vegetables and bananas. A sacral belt if worn all the time, can give good support till the back heals.

All the above can be done at home, and would definitely help in easing the symptoms of sciatica which has been bothering a person even for a long time.
