On Saturday evening, the Cape Town Carnival hit Long Street and dazzled onlookers with incredible costumes and fun, fanciful ideas. The theme of this years carnival was Dream, the future' - allowing participants free range on interpretation for themselves as individuals, the city and in fact the world.
The carnival was split into separate pods which consisted of 1 float and 6 lead performers who were then followed by 200 other performers, all in their own unique costumes. Each pod had a theme:
Pod 1: Africa Beginning
Pod 2: Birds of a feather
Pod 3: Ancient and Modern
Pod 4: Slice of Cape Town
Pod 5: Precious Borders
Pod 6: World without Borders
Pod 7: Marching in Time
Pod 8: Free to be You and Me
Pod 9: Energy
Pod 10: Dance then!
Once all the pods had made their way up Long street, DJ Fresh from 5FM led the street party which was said to be one of the most successful to date.
The aim of the Cape Town Carnival is to create another element around which tourists can congregate and Cape Town can become known for. This will in turn create jobs and something exciting to look forward to every year for locals and tourists alike.
The carnival was certainly very entertaining and the party afterwards was world class - Long street had been barricaded off so that we didn't have to compete with vehicles, we could just enjoy the music and have a good time with the rest of Cape Town who was there to have fun. I'm definitely going to diarize this event for next year!
