It is an old adage that "Change is the only constant thing in life"; yet making the slightest of changes in our lifestyle, be it related to our eating habits or overcoming an addiction, seems like a monumental task to most of us.

Our very own self-defeating behaviors and our tendency to get back to old habits hold us from living a happy and fulfilling life.

We tend to resist change and prefer our age-old ways and habits to give us a false sense of security and certainty. But we fail to realize that sometimes change is for good though it may come with an element of surprise and unpredictability.

We tend to form certain habits which may become difficult to discontinue. Letting go off a habit is impossible. But we cannot continue with a bad habit. So the solution is to replace the bad habit with something positive and beneficial. For instance if you have a habit of smoking, you can replace this bad habit, which no doubt is tremendously injurious to your health, with a habit of chewing a peppermint gum.

Some people have the habit of binge eating i.e. snacking on unhealthy items whenever they feel stressed or anxious or bored. This tendency of mindless snacking can be substituted with eating healthy food items like salad or fruits. After some time you will realize that the new habit of eating nutritious food is not only good for keeping your stomach full but helps you in preventing weight gain.

Many people find it difficult to adhere to weight loss programs especially the diet specified by healthcare experts. To overcome the tendency of overeating and unhealthy snacking, you need more than just an exercise regime. You need to find the determination that will keep you motivated when you think of quitting and going back to old ways.

Small modifications in your lifestyle can help in all aspects be it emotional or physical. It can help you become a better person and handle your relationships more effectively. Reward yourself for every accomplishment no matter how big or small it is.
