Things to Do in Alexandria
Things to Do in Alexandria

Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt, and is situated along the country's coast flanking the Mediterranean Sea. Because of this, Alexandria is a fantastic holiday destination for aquatic sports fans, as well as beach bums who love nothing more than spending a day soaking up the sun in an exotic land.

The beach isn't all Alexandria has to offer, however: being in one of the world's most fascinating countries when it comes to ancient history, Alexandria has much to offer in terms of ancient Egyptian knowledge and cultural facts. One of the city's best known remains, the catacombs, can be found close to another popular historical artefact, the Roman triumphal column "Pompey's Pillar". The catacombs consist of a labyrinthine complex of several levels, which can be reached via a large spiral staircase. Discovered late in the nineteenth century, the catacombs were found to contain multiple sarcophagi, Romano-Egyptian symbols, sculpted pillars, statues, burial niches, and a Roman style banquet hall within its myriad chambers.

Coming back into the present (and the world of the living), visitors will love exploring the different districts and neighbourhoods of Alexandria and discovering the distinct flavour each one possesses. There are several large squares you can visit which are perfect for people watching and for those who'd like a sight of grandeur, the Montaza Palace, Ras el-Tin Palace and the Presidential Palace are all worth visiting. There are several parks in which you can relax, including the Montaza Royal Gardens which offer stunning views and are well worth a look while you check out the palace, and a trip to Alexandria isn't complete without a visit to the city's fantastic zoo.

For something a little different, you'll love the Royal Jewellery Museum with its many jaw-dropping exhibits, and the perfect round off to your day is a relaxing stroll along the Corniche, a 3km walkway along the harbour where you'll find markets, restaurants and historic sights.

After all that, you'll be thinking of getting to bed so it could be time to return to your hotels in Alexandria! Make sure you don't head off to sleep too late as you'll be wanting to get up bright and early the next day for another full day of exploring. And with so much to see and do in this fantastic Egyptian city, you can be sure that you'll find plenty of excellent ways to fill your time.
