Red Light Cameras
Red Light Cameras

Technology has come on leaps and bounds since the invention of the car, and this can be used for our safety, but also for the police to punish law breakers.

There are cameras in America that are positioned in connection with red lights. Should a car jump a light and enter the intersection then the camera photographs it, recording the number plate, and mails the offender with an eye watering fine. Some of the money goes to the company who invented the device, and the rest goes to the local council to make the roads in the area better and work on road safety.

But critics are campaigning for these cameras to be removed, as the time that a light is orange is 4.2 seconds maximum which isn't long enough for a car to make it through the junction. If a driver miscalculates when the light they are going through turns orange, they could be hit with a hefty fine, despite the fact that they technically abided by the law.

The reality is that the majority of drivers, when seeing an orange light in front of them, slam on the brakes, which is understandable. Who wants to get a ticket after all? The issue is that this causes more accident where following cars go into the back of these vehicles, and it therefore causes more deaths on the roads, not to mention a whole host of injuries that cost us, the insurance payer, hundreds of pounds extra when we come to renegotiate our Car Insurance policy. Most people argue that they want to see a reduction in the amount of deaths on the roads as opposed to the amount of capital gained for speeding tickets.

Recently, five states in the U.S.A. took the vote as to whether they wanted the camera, and all five decided that they were a bad investment, including in large cities like Houston.

If you are a car owner in the UK and you are driving on the roads then ensure you have Cheap Car Insurance , as this is a UK legality as is an MOT certificate.
