What you see Nisha's Playschool / Shiksha Niketan stands out with its ideal campus for a primary school in Goa. It's like a whole new world meant only for kids. Some classrooms have tiny entrance openings where adults would have to stoop to enter. Also, there are no closed areas in the school so as to enable easy accessibility to each child. The school is constructed in fine brick architecture.
An open space at the ground level (around the classrooms) serves as an auditorium where daily morning assembly meetings are conducted. Several rooms (besides the standard classrooms) are allotted for various activities. A special, quaint room (also called the Doll room) has bunk beds stuffed with soft toys and dolls for the little kids to play with. The SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) activity room is the most adorable with a cute kiddy styled kitchen table over which all the requisites for activities including cooking and cleaning are provided.
Locating the school may be a bit of a hassle. Further, there are no signboards adding to the confusion. The best way out would be to stop and ask for directions from people on your way so that you don't get lost.
What you get The play school and primary school in Goa, follows the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) syllabus.
The school is located in Porvorim at a distance from the main commercial area. Hence, the atmosphere is very peaceful and just about right for a teaching environment. Only four main classrooms are provided, one for each grade (i.e. from I IV) and only 28 students are accommodated in a single class. Consequently, the student to teacher ratio is good because of which personalized attention is given to each child.
Various activity classes are conducted here daily. These include music, drama, needle work, SUPW, hiking and P.E (Physical Education). A library, computer room, clinic, playground and dining area are a few other facilities provided. The school takes the services of a caterer to provide snacks and lunch too.
Admissions are open on the first Sunday of January. This includes an interview with the parents. However, classes commence only in June.
Our verdict An excellent feature of Shiksha Niketan is that the students are made to do their home work while they are at school itself. Hence, parents can focus more on revision when the kids are home. Though the fees charged are higher than most other schools, Nisha's Play School seems reputed. The school is closed on Saturdays.
