Animation is a field consisting of different functional areas that work together to create the final rendered output that we call animated movies. Making an animated film requires the same manpower and the work force behind making the real one. A proper animation would require animators, storyboard artist, layout artist, sculptors modelers etc.
The Entertainment field such as the Television and the Film are the major source that require animators however animation has grown has grown so much over the years that nowadays even there are openings for CD-Rom design, Game design, and Web design. Making an career in animation requires one to have a good roundabout knowledge of the different fields that one can choose based on their personnel level of interest.
Lets start from the very basic. Traditional career animation option includes doing all the Pre-production work starting from sketching to cleanups.
The various job opportunities include Screenplay writer , Storyboard, Cleanup Artist, Coloring Artist etc. Animation begins with writer. The writer should have the potential to invoke the thinking process of the general mass. Once the story has been approved the story then gets converted into an script. So that's where the script writer comes into picture. He/she has to turn the story into a script with the events described in a systematic manner with the actions and the dialogues and the camera angle.
After the script has been approved then the story boarding artist steps forward this is the area where a person with a good flair for sketching and drawing can apply for. The Director is the one who approves of all the Storyboards and the scripts. Voice recording is the next step behind. So if required dubbing is again something that one can choose for a profession. Layout is done when the sound recording takes place and the storyboard are cleaned and created and the layout artist is someone works with the director to design the location and costumes. The layout artist is responsible for making model sheets as well.
Production
Production consists of making the Backgrounds ,sketching, inking and painting of animation
Background are painted before the characters are animated so that the characters can react to the surroundings. After the painting of the characters and the background the animation steps begin. There are many types of animators, one is the Key Animator and the next one is the "In-betweeners". Key animators place in the main animation and the In Betweeners draw the intermediate drawings which gives the animation more rhythm and smoothness.
Post Production includes film development, editing adding sound effects, cutting the negative. Sounds are added in the final print. Finally after all the details have been clipped in the movie the technician uses computer programs and special equipment to copy the scenes off the negative onto the one inch video. Thus an Animated film has been made.
