How to Put Together an Impromptu Washington DC New Years Party

Last year I decided at the last minute to throw together a Washington DC New Years party just for close family and friends. I couldn't afford to hold a large party and pull out all of the stops to make it a glamorous event, but it turned out to be fun and intimate without all of the pretence of some of the parties I had overheard my co-workers were throwing.

I asked each guest to bring some finger foods like small sandwiches, baked desserts, cheese platters, chips and salsa, guacamole, and anything else they could come up with. This gave my guests a variety of food to choose from and made the ringing in of new year washington dc very tasty!!

My family is a big game playing family and so are some of my friends, so I asked each person to bring one of their favorite games so we had competitive things to do until midnight. (I have a very competitive group of friends and family!) Each guest brought a good mix of alcohol and champagne so playing the games drunk was hysterical. (There were designated drivers, but they still had fun.) While people were playing I took pictures and quickly printed them out on my computer and asked each person to write one New Year's resolution on the back. I held on to them for a month and then mailed them to the guests to see if they kept their Washington DC New Years resolutions.

By the time the games were over (or even while people were still playing) I got out the karaoke machine. The theme was music from the 70s and at first people were hesitant - except the drunk people - and that ended up making the washington d.c. new years' party even more fun. You don't need a lot of money and fancy decorations to make an impromptu party fun. Just being with my closest friends and family was enough.

The Washington DC New Years party was a huge success. Everyone stayed well past midnight until all of the food and most of the alcohol was finished. Then I sent certain guests home with some aspirin. They'll definitely need it!
