First, select a material for your darts. You won't need anything too extravagant if you just want to play better, but a decent Tungsten dart will help you grip better and these darts refuse wear and tear like no other. Though Tungsten darts can be expensive, if you find a pack with a high enough percentage of Tungsten (around 80% is great) you'll have an extremely effortless time gripping and throwing your darts.
The other thing you want in your own set of darts is a good barrel grip. Heavy knurlings on a barrel grip will make it easier to grip, but the heavier knurlings may make your fingers stick to the dart when throwing, messing up your aim. Smoother knurlings may be harder to grip, often slipping away from you at crucial moments, but the dart will leave your hand more fluidly with them attached.
Lastly, you will require nice flights. There are almost as many types of flights as there are birds in the sky, but don't be overwhelmed, just check out a few differemt types and send your dart flying. If you already have a feel for how you play, then consider that of the types of flights, dimpled flights stabilize throws, hard flights decrease deflection, nylon flights are the most durable but offer little other support, and soft flights are weaker, but more maneuverable (darts with soft flights twist out of the way of opposing darts on the board). As with the other materials, choose a dart flight that is right for your particular play style.
Because of how much fun darts is, you'll undoubtedly play again and again, but before deciding on your own set of darts you will probably feel like the game is out to get you.
