Google Universal Search - It's a Go!

A while back, I talked a little bit on the new Universal Search that Google was planning to release. Google Universal Search is the new technology that would allow results, appearing in Google for search terms you use, to show more than just websites. Universal Search would now incorporate such things a blogs, articles, videos, podcasts, newsgroups, social bookmarks, images and such. This would allow people to find more information related to their searches and therefore become a more informed user. Great Idea!

In December of 2003, Google filed a patent for Universal Search, in May 2007, Google announced that it was implementing Universal Search but it wasn't until December of 2007 that we really started to see the Universal Search results appear in standard search listings.

To date, Universal Search has been minimal when it comes to the type and amount of alternative content that has incorporated into a search at Google.com. This is about to change! On November 4, 2008, Google was granted its patent for Universal Search, which means they will now increase the size and functionality of Universal Search.

The Purpose of Universal Search

I know what some of you are thinking, "What's the purpose of Universal Search and how does it affect me?". Well, the purpose is simple - get more content out to the general public. Why would Google want to get more content out to the general public? Because they know that Internet users are becoming more intelligent which leads to research before committing to a purchase. Since Google's desire is to dominate the Internet and possibly the world, they want you to think of them as the end-all, be-all for your every need.

When websites were the only thing offered through traditional web searches, people were at the hands of each website when it came to research of their products or services. If two companies produced similar products or offered similar services, there was no way to know which was superior by the content listed on each site.

Now that Google is including these additional resources, people have been empowered to make more informed decisions based on information that was either not available previously or hard to find before Universal Search came onto the scene. People can now interact with other people through product reviews, blogs, articles and social networking sites - all of this lends to a more informed consumer which is ultimately more likely to purchase once they visit a website.

Universal Search is sort of like a car lot. Most people don't go to the car lot during the day when salesmen or women will badger them the entire time. People tend to drive through the lot after hours, look at the cars, read the spec sheets posted in the window and once they've found the car they like, go home and do a little more research online. When they are comfortable with the information they have gathered, they will return to the car lot during the day and talk with one of the sales people. Chances are, that sales person is going to make a deal right there on the spot.

What Does This Mean For You?

This means that all of the work you or your marketing has been doing since December 2007 and all of the work that you continue to do within social media environments, will finally be given full credit. This may not happen on the very next update but within the next few months, I predict we will see a large increase in alternative data sources being listed within the search results on Google.com.
