People and companies that want to know how popular their website or blog is, can go by the number of backlinks, blogline subscribes, bookmarks, and buddies they have generated - I call them B4.
Backlinks are given by people, and not by bots. This means, no one is going to give you backlink if there is no original thinking in your writing. Uniqueness is the king. If what you have posted is something that is already available in the public domain or not so unique, people will not have the incentive to give you a backlink.
To improve blogline subscriptions, you should not post uninspiring content - or content you feel is not interesting to yourself in the first place. I love to read Google blogs, because they are always informative, and are written in a superb human language. One of my mentors in journalism used to say that there are two things that are becoming very scarce (in the offline world): "1) good speeches, and 2) good concerts". In social media what is becoming very scarce is "good posts". It is true - at least, appears as true - because in the economy of plenty, no one is going to pay attention to anything that is not the best.
Similarly, only when your website has some utility value will it be bookmarked. In my bookmark, I have some dictionaries, financial calculators, writing resources, and of course articles that serve as ready reckoner. Finally, buddies list - your fans, followers, and subscribers of Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. It is the most time consuming social media component to grow. In the initial stages, it takes personal contacts, phone calls, direct meetings, etc to get someone become your fan and follower. However, fans are your revenue source. In the words of Kevin Kelly, founder of Weird Magazine, all it takes is a "1,000 true fans" for a creator to make a living. You are free to decide the number depending on whether you are an individual or a company - and within company, whether you are into selling capital goods or software or consumer products. But all of us need a critical number of buddies - fans, and followers.
So, all the elements of B4 metrics are important. And finding the metrics for your website is not a big deal. You could check out websites like Quarkbase and provide your URL. This simple submission can give you the real time data on B4s - and many more types of rankings - for your website or blog.
However, do not give weightage to B4 too much. There is going to be business growth, even if you get a very small number of page views, if it is from your target audience. If you are selling diamonds, you do not have to bother about foot steps - the proportion of high-networth customers is very small, anyway.
At best B4 is an indicator of good things to come. Hence, there is no need to set targets as such for boosting your B4 with some inorganic strategies - popularity just for the sake of it is not going to serve boost your bottom line in any way. Of course, when it comes to business the fifth B of bottom line is more important that backlinks or buddies list.
At the ultimate analysis, it is always good to go by qualitative steps such as creating a useful widget, publishing an article with useful data or links, etc. They are going to help in the long run. As in life - that of people and businesses - the breakthrough or leap-frog happens not every day. It would happen one day. However, it is important to value-adding your content base or resource base every day. The value addition should happen on a daily basis (almost). Only then, when one fine day your Digged article or blog brings a big traffic, your website would have enough materials for it to be bookmarked, and entice audience. So, do not wait for the big day, but take incremental steps of value-addition.
