Today team building plays a very vital role in the corporate world. Formerly teams were developed by grouping people together and making them to get to know one another before they were given the responsibility of any assignment, but today a team can consist of people who have never had the chance of even meeting each other before and may never meet either. They can be people who may not even be in the same physical location.One of the first steps that contribute to effective team building will be the efficient announcement of the team aims and objectives. It is important that every member of a particular team working on a specific project is well informed of their role as a team member and what will be their roles and responsibilities. It is the onus of the Project manager to spell this out to his members ensuring that there is no overlapping of tasks. In addition, it would be a good idea to allow each member of the team a free hand regarding his sphere of work, thereby ensure faster and better results.However, every team member for a project has to be assessed on his strengths and weaknesses before he is assigned his role. Moreover, the project manager should make it a point to know each of his members personally and vice versa. This will go a long way in creating an effective team.Another very significant point when building a team is to ensure that every team member is included and can have his say, when important decisions are being taken. Actually, a brain storming session once every few days can help people come up with better ideas and various aspects to one problem and its solutions. This will also make the team members feel more conscientious about their roles.Make it a point to ensure that any changes that are suddenly decided upon are clearly communicated to every member, because sudden changes if not communicated on time can upset the smooth working of the team. Many projects tend to be unsuccessful for the sheer lack of communication between the team members. Trust too is a vital part of a team building process. In is imperative that every member has trust in his fellow team members the lack of which can lead to people becoming guarded and defensive. In effect, this is one of the main challenges if teams are to work efficiently together.Today business houses are beginning to realize that soft skills are as vital as technical skills and experience, so they ensure that their team leaders possess the necessary soft and technical skills to build a good team to work at projects. When choosing a person to join a team for a particular project, ensure that he/she has a passion for what they are doing. These are the sort of people who will do well as team members.
