How To Stop Stammering - Kill Your Stammer

Stammering is a disorder of rhythm and fluency of speech. It is a communication disorder in which the normal flow of speech is broken by repetitions, prolongations, or abnormal stoppages (no sound or block) of sounds and syllables. Although the cause of stammering is not known, brain damage, anxiety and genetic factors play a role in the development of stuttering in certain cases. Now the question is this: How to stop stammering?

The aims for stammering treatment include teaching the person skills, strategies, and behaviors that help oral communication. Fluency shaping therapy and stuttering modification therapy are two examples. In fluency shaping therapy, the person who is stuttering may be taught to control and monitor his speech rate, or to control his breathing. He or she is taught how to practice smooth and fluent speech at a very slow speed, to use short sentences and phrases, and to stretch vowels and consonants while trying to secure continuous airflow. Eventually, the person will learn how to utter smooth speech at a faster speed, and use longer sentences and phrases.

Stuttering modification therapy has four stages: identification, desensitization, modification, and stabilization. The aim in this type of therapy is to modify the stuttering so that it is easier and requires less of an effort instead of completely eradicating it. The principle behind this method is that if anxiety exacerbates stuttering, using easier stuttering with less avoidance and fear will alleviate the stuttering.

Lastly, we have the use of electronic fluency devices. One type of device fits into the ear canal much like a hearing aid, and replays a slightly altered version of the wearer?s voice into the ear so that it sounds as if he or she is speaking in unison with another person. This technique, called masking, blocks out the stutterer?s voice while talking. Some patients have responded well to this type of treatment while others have not, but researchers are continuing to study the long-term effectiveness of these electronic fluency devices.

No matter how you answer the question ?how to stop stammering?, you have to remember that intervention close to the onset of stammering has a higher success rate.
