Chia Seeds; Not Just for Novelty Anymore!

Chia is well known from the popularity of Chia Pets, sold on infomercials during the Christmas season. However, many people are unaware of the extreme nutritional value these little seeds have to offer.

Revered by the ancient Aztecs as a powerful warrior fuel, Chia is a high-energy endurance food. Its gelatinous forming capabilities help to slow the conversion of carbs to sugar during digestion, which gives you long-lasting energy and keeps you full longer. This is also extremely beneficial for diabetics, as it helps to prevent a blood sugar spike. Chia seeds also help the body to regulate more efficiently the absorption of nutrients and body fluids, so your electrolyte balance is maintained. Because chia can absorb 10 times its own weight in water, it is helpful both for weight loss and also for providing great hydration for athletes. On top of all that, chai seeds help to reduce blood pressure and can help to prevent a sour stomach and heartburn.

Chia seeds are a great source of:

Protein, which from Chia is digested and absorbed easily. Chia is a great food during growth periods, including for kids, adolescents, pregnant women, and athletes for regeneration of muscle tissue.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which are essential for your body's ability to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. Chia, in fact, is the richest vegetable source of Omega-3's, beating out even salmon!

Linoleic Acid, which is important for healthy adrenal and thyroid glands. It also supports healthy skin, mucus membranes and nerves.

Calcium. Chia provides 5 times more calcium than milk!

So, How Can Chia Be Used?

The possibilities for using chia are endless, but here are 3 ideas to get you started:

Blend 2 Tablespoons in a blender with 2 cups of kefir or milk of your choice (my favorite is almond milk). Add 2 cups of fruit (I prefer strawberries, bananas, and mango) and blend until creamy.

Bake into cookies, cakes, muffins, or brownies. Add to cup to your favorite recipe.

Sprinkle chia seeds over salads, oatmeal, yogurt, or soup.
