Pueraria Mirifica grows in primarily in Thailand, although it also grows in the under developed countries of Burma and Laos. Much of the Pueraria Mirifica entering the supplement and cosmetic industry is derived from wild pueraria mirifica. It is very difficult to determine the quality of each plant. Over the last 50 years there was no way to measure the chromenes in pueraria mirifica. The major problem is that both miroestrol and deoyxmiroestrol are very difficult and fractionate and even much more difficult to synthesize. Without the availability of these
two compounds there is no way to accurately measure these compounds in the plant. Thai academic chemists have advised me they just don't have the budgets. Recently with the availability of some small amounts of chromenes in several academic settings their have been legitimate testing results for chromenes. The results demonstrated that deoxymiroestrol and miroestrol indeed co-existed in the roots. In one study using commercial supplements, in the highest quality samples deoxymiroestrol contributed the
highest estrogenic contribution although miroestrol was dominant in quantity. In another
study done on roots harvested in the wild by academics bought immediately back to the laboratory for preparation went as follows: deoxymiroestrol was far dominant in quantity vs. miroestrol. Of course deoxymiroestrol is far dominant in activity. This suggests at least for now that companies using wild pueraria mirifica because of crude or delayed processing techniques are delivering compromised pueraria mirifica and hence compromised products. Deoxymiroestrol is quite volatile and readily oxidizes to miroestrol. Further studies will be needed for to notion to be confirmed.
