Body Piercing Instructions and Risks

Before you consider doing your own body piercing, always consider going to a professional first. Not only can they assure you of the sanitary condition of their premises (and indeed must post them on their premises at all times), but they know the safest places on the human body to place piercings.

If you simply MUST do it yourself, be sure to play it safe. Reduce the chance of infection; wash your hands with soap and hot running water before performing any part of the piercing and be sure to sterilize the area that you want to pierce. There are a number of kits available, choose the kit for your body part.

All ears

Before you pierce your own ears, make sure you have everything you need. Have the following on hand: a sterling silver or 14K gold stud earring, a bowl of ice, rubbing alcohol, antibacterial cream and a brand new small-gauge safety pin which is free of rust.

Half an hour before you begin, soak the pin in rubbing alcohol, then mark the spot on your ear where you want to put the piercing. Now, freeze the target area using the ice. Quickly push the pin through your ear lobe and leave it in for about fifteen minutes. When you retract the pin, quickly refill the hold with the cleaned and prepared ear stud. Then apply anti-bacterial cream to prevent infection.

During the next four weeks (sometimes 6) that it takes for the piercing to heal, use alcohol twice daily to clean around the piercing. Wash your hands before this and when you twist the stud in your ear daily. While washing and brushing your hair, be careful not to catch on the stud either.

CAUTION: Cartilage is a tough substance that really hurts you when you pierce it and can take a long time to heal.

Navel gazing

Before you begin to pierce your navel, make sure you have the following supplies on hand. Anti-bacterial cream is an essential as are rubbing alcohol, a piercing needle which is pre-lubricated as well as cotton swabs and a ball closure ring. This piercing is not recommended for "outties".

Start by sterilizing the area you want to pierce and clean your hands well. Now, pull the area where you are going to pierce slightly out, then push the pre-lubricated piercing needle straight through and leave it there for a moment. Now, open the ring and place it carefully in the hole behind the needle. As you take the needle out, push the ball closure through the hole, and once it is through, close the ring. Remember to swab the area well with anti-bacterial cream to prevent infection.

This kind of piercing requires cleaning twice daily for the whole three to six months that it takes to heal. You can do this by first cleaning and then blotting to remove any dampness. Using anti-bacterial soap, clean the area and the jewelery well and follow with anti-bacterial cream. Avoid swimming pools that are chlorinated for at least a week.

Raised Brows

The process for piercing the brows is the same in essence as the navel and also requires the same after care, but for up to six and not less than four weeks.
