Buying a new house is exciting, but moving into it is always a lot of work. You arrange for the purchase of your home and schedule the move. But before all of the transport can actually happen, there is a massive job ahead of you. Packing can take a lot out of you but with the right method you can get through it efficiently and make moving easier.
Good Packing Takes Time
Anyone can throw objects in the proverbial cardboard box (or laundry hamper, basket or bin), but packing that will allow for a successful move needs to be thought out. When you take the time to plan for packing the result is much less stress, mess and damage.
Always start packing earlier than you think you'll need to. If you can realistically pack your belongings in a few days, give yourselves a week or more. If you think it will take you a few weeks (as is fairly normal) give yourself at least a month. That way you will have time to do everything well, organize thoroughly and pack each item as if it's the only thing you're moving.
Don't leave the difficult items until the end or you risk rushing through the packing that is the most important. For instance, don't pack the books first and leave the good china until the night before you move. At the very least you should plan to pack some of each as the date gets closer. Better yet, give yourself a deadline for each type of item - clothing, books and papers, dishes and other breakables, seasonal items, etc. Many experts suggest starting at the top floor of your home and working down.
Find Plenty of Boxes
You will need boxes of all different shapes and sizes for any move. Packing heavy items into smaller boxes makes the physical transporting easier and extra large boxes shouldn't be used at all unless it's for one particularly over-sized item.
Using certain items to help move other items can be a useful trick. Towels and bed sheets, for instance, can be used to keep breakables safe or eliminate the risk of scratches and dents on the furniture. If decorative boxes, baskets and bins are sturdy enough you can actually pack them up for moving day, which will allow you to do double duty with packing and moving.
Well thought out packing makes moving day that much easier and organising your boxes will make unpacking even better. When buying a new house you won't want packing to get in your way so make sure to plan ahead.
