What you see - Between the Lines is one of Mumbai's best kept secrets. It is a quiet caf, inconspicuously nestled on the extended balcony of Magna Bookstore, Kala Ghoda.
The length of the balcony, with a row of small round tables and some light furniture serves as the cafe. Its high ceilings, long glass windows, minimalistic seating arrangements and small chandeliers above, make the place seem like anything but a conventional coffee shop.
Four tables with two chairs each are mostly empty and therefore, this place, in a way spells intimacy. Adding a colonial touch is the arrangement of tinkling a miniature bell to place the order.
What you get - The menu at Between the Lines ranges from a host of hot and cold beverages and a wide range of short-eats.
The hot beverages here are titled, Old World Caf'. You can take a pick from a wide range of organic teas (all for a modest Rs. 30) like Green Tea (from the tea gardens of Bengal), Wild Night (ginger blend), Peppermint tea, Ginseng tea and Apple tea. As for coffee, they have Dangerous Behaviour (cinnamon blend), La Specialita (black coffee with ground dry ginger) etc, all for around Rs. 40. Cool Waters' includes fresh fruit juices from orange, tomato, apple to amla for Rs. 50 each, Honey and lemon and Catch 22, a tempting mocktail of lime punch and a blend of herbs. Worth a try is the delicious soya milk for Rs. 40.
The food items are listed under the section, Gastronomic delights' and include crusty pizza, crisp French fries for Rs. 40 and sandwiches. Another section on the menu called Healthy Trips' is for the health-conscious. It consists of items like Lite Bite (baked bean in a yummy sauce served with whole wheat bread) for Rs. 50. A wide range of both vegetarian and non- vegetarian sandwiches like Grilled spicy soya sandwich with organic spices and the good ol' Grilled veg. sandwich for Rs. 50 are there too. Another dish worth trying is Green Mile, an appetizing light sandwich that comes with a special in-house chutney for Rs. 50. And for egg lovers, the big delight comes in the form of fresh whipped eggs in coriander and green chillies in whole wheat bread.
We tried a southern Rhapsody Coffee for Rs. 30 and a Wrapped wonder for Rs. 70. The coffee was subtle with just a mild hint of cinnamon. A perfect evening cup. The sandwich (Wrapped wonder) was one of the best we've had in coffee shops in Mumbai. The chicken pieces were succulent and drenched in creamy white mayonnaise, wrapped in fresh brown bread. A sprinkle of coriander added to the distinct flavor.
Between the Lines has ice creams for desserts. Single and double scoops in a host of flavors are available.
Our verdict Between the Lines is the closest you can get to a quiet cafe right in the heart of bustling Mumbai. It is strictly not a hang-out place for a college gang. It is just an avenue to escape from the rat-race of the city, right under its nose. The caf has a happy hours 10% discount on snacks and drinks between 5 PM and 7.30 PM. Service is quick and impressive. They wouldn't mind catering to your special requests even though those may not be a part of your order. Like we requested for cinnamon to be blended with our coffee and it was heeded to. Limited parking space is available nearby. No catering or home delivery services are provided.
