What you see Located in the busy area of Shivarampet in Mysore, Rajkamal theatre is on the main road (which is congested at times), next to the landmark Balaji Palace Hotel. The theatre has a monolithic kind of infrastructure with very impressive exteriors. The ticket counter is at the entrance of the theatre, adjacent to the road.
What you get Rajkamal Theatre is one of the largest theatres in the city and has been screening films from several decades. It is a single-screen theatre and screens Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu movies. The lobby also showcases mementos from various film production companies, and has a food and beverage counter. The theatre has comfortable cushioned seating with ample leg space and is divided into balcony, first class and second class areas. Movies are screened on the 70 MM screen with Digital Dolby surround sound support.
MetroMela finds the interiors of the theatre interesting - simple, yet attractive with the display of several movie posters. The theatre does not have air-conditioners, but the high ceilings and large number of fans allow ample circulation of air. We also like the ambience, sound and picture quality. The manager of the theatre proudly claims that almost all the English films released in Mysore are first screened at the Rajkamal theatre. The theatre has four shows a day - at 10.30 AM, 1.30 PM, 4.30 PM and 7.30 PM. The tickets are priced at Rs. 50 for balcony, Rs. 30 for first class and Rs. 25 for second class.
The washrooms at Rajkamal theatre are clean and well maintained. The food and beverage section is good, but a tad expensive. Tickets can be booked over the phone, but we were told (by some regular movie-watchers at Rajkamal) that this booking is not reliable during rush hours. Parking facilities for both two- and four-wheelers is very limited, and you may have to park your vehicle by the road itself.
Our verdict Rajkamal Theatre is impressive for its cinema-viewing facilities. But the proximity of the theatre to the main road and lack of compound space is cumbersome. The management could pay a little more attention to parking space, as this becomes a deterrent for regular cinemagoers.
