The simple dc motor can prove to be a lot of fun. For this motor all you need is a battery, a pointed screw, spherical magnet and a wire. Assembling all the details sooner you will be ready with your own device.
Generally motors follow the left hand rule but in case of dc motors anti-left hand rule is followed. One can easily notice that when you play and touch the loose end of the wire to the screw it will not work. Same will be the case if you touch the wire to the middle of the bottom of the magnet. To work this you need to touch the wire outside the surface of the magnet.
The current flows from the direction to positive terminal of the battery to the screw then into the magnet and finally enters wire. The current flows within the magnet and its magnetic field. The magnetic field is defined as the South and the North Pole. In other words you can understand as the first finger points in the direction of the field with the left hand rule. When north end of the magnet is on the head then this has to pint up in the direction while the second finger will be in the current flow direction. From the center of the magnet to the outer surface it is where the wire touches it.
The place where the force acts on the current flowing through the magnet is to be pointed as thumb. But since the exit location of the current is fixed being unable to move the force gets against the mass of the magnet in the opposite direction. This force causes the magnet to spin counter clockwise.
When the flip gets over it will spin in the counter clockwise direction (CCW). When the flip of the battery is over then the spin is in clockwise direction (CW). On doing both the dc motor would spin in CCW direction again.
You can get many sources to design a simple dc motor. All it needs is a battery, screw, magnet and a wire and you have your model designed. The rules that the magnet follows are opposite as that is what makes it rotate when required. The spinning is controlled with some device to monitor the speed of the motor.
