Is SLP The Job For Me?
Is SLP The Job For Me?

If you are interested in working in occupational therapy, jobs of all kinds are there to choose from. They are all worthwhile and fulfilling, though obviously require a good deal of commitment, patience, and the right temperament. So why should you choose to train and work as a speech language pathologist (SLP)?

When you think about it, one of the greatest differences between human beings and other animals is our ability to communicate to the degree that we do. We can describe what we see, hear, and feel in great detail, and we enjoy doing so. This means that when language ability is diminished or even lost, we miss it terribly. It can cause depression, anxiety, and frustrationand, of course, it can impact on other areas of life, limiting a patient's ability to discuss all the other difficulties they may be experiencing.

SLPs deal with people of all ages, and from all walks of life. You may find yourself with a young patient whose ability to speak has not developed as fast as his or her peers, or someone with a severe physical impediment to their ability to speak. You may, on the other hand, work with someone who feels that their speech is simply not as clear as it could be, or is pitched too high or too low, so that they find communication with others is less effective than they would like Just think about how many politicians and other people in public life have undergone speech therapy for such reasons. In SLP you will work with other people in occupational therapy jobs, as many patients with speech difficulties also have limitations in other areas of their life that will be undergoing treatment at the same time.
