Many of us begin a new workout full of fire, determined to be the most disciplined human beings in the whole world, knowing that we will lose more fat than has ever been lost while packing on absurd amounts of muscle. We are so full of excitement that we'll often pay for a full year's membership at the local gym, buy a whole new set of workout clothes, and tell everybody about us that we're going to change. However, three weeks in most of us quit, dispirited, bored, in pain and feeling guilty and resentful. Why does this happen so often? How can we ensure that it doesn't happen to us? Here are three tricks to help you stay on track.
The first is to find a workout buddy. These are priceless. If you can find somebody who is equally if not more motivated than you are, who will meet you at the gym or pick you up at home, who can listen in sympathy when you're down and motivate you when it's time to work, you will find it much harder to quit. Just knowing they're waiting for you will often make you get up and get to the gym, and you will feel awful about letting them down. A workout buddy is truly key.
Second, try to find a really good source of motivation that goes beyond vanity. We can all get started because we want to lose ten pounds, but can quit just as easily. Deciding we want to get in shape so that we can be around when our kids grow up, so that we can really enjoy a holiday, so that we can lower our cholesterol or regain our sex drive is a whole different matter altogether. These kinds of motivation stick, and can make all the difference when you want to quit.
Finally, try giving an at-home workout a shot. These workouts can be done in the privacy of your own home, need no gym membership fees, allow you to play your own music and exercise in privacy away from the stares of strangers. You can workout without a commute, and jump in the shower or fix yourself a snack immediately when you're done. Few kinds of workouts are more convenient or easier to stick to.
There you go. Those are three great tips to help you stick to your workout!
