subject: What Causes Monophobia? [print this page] What Causes Monophobia? What Causes Monophobia?
Panic sets in -- you are feeling desperately lonely and needing to have someone with you. The idea of being by yourself or being alone in an unfamiliar place can be frightening and even depressing. These are all feelings that go through people suffering from a condition known as Monophobia or the fear of being alone. The overwhelming fear of being alone can be not only personally frustrating but it can be extremely destructive to relationships of any level. Where does this abnormal fear come from?
People who suffer from the fear of being alone may think initially the fears or pangs of loneliness are normal but it is possible that they stem from deeper issues. Possible causes of Monophobia can begin in childhood. Children who experience the pain of a parent abandoning them can suffer from feelings of being unwanted and unloved. Other children who have suffered abuse in the form of being locked in a room or a small confining place may transfer that fear to adulthood in the form of not wanting to be left alone in a room. When a close family member passes away in a close-knit family, again the person can feel the pain of abandonment and express this by developing Monophobia.
Some symptoms of this condition can include panic attacks, anxiety along with the inability to control ones emotions. People suffering from this condition may become overly dependent on a significant other, friends, or family members. This extreme condition can put strain on these relationships, sometimes permanently. Help is available with the proper diagnosis and treatment from a trusted mental health professional.
