During the last two decades, the internet as seen an unprecedented growth. In fact, the exponential growth of the internet is termed as "one of the biggest things to happen this century in the history of the communication networks". In 1981, there were only 200-odd internet host connections, which are very less in number. By 1992, this number rose to over one million. By early in 2005, the number was stupendous 180 million hosts. This shows that how internet growing with a great speed.
The growth of the internet is important for the number of reasons.
1).The First reason is the internet has brought with it new kinds of application such as the email, that has antiquated the conventional means of communication. Email has now become the preferred best mode of communication, especially in developed countries. Apart from the Email, E-commerce or transaction over the internet is another application that has revolutionized the way of business transaction is done.
2).Second the internet has made remote access to corporate networks possible. With the help of a modem and dial-up connection, an employee can access the files system of his or her organization with considerable ease. Thus, the internet has indirectly facilitated telecommunication.
3).Third, a service like internet telephony has drastically reduced the cost of voice communication over a long distance. Although the voice quality over the internet is relatively poor, better software solution has improved the quality of the voice. Since internet telephony is cheap, it has become a serious contender to challenge the monopoly of telecommunication networks.
4).The internet also used for the entertainment purpose. On internet we can download the movies, songs, wallpaper, pc software, books, video tutorial and many more. There are also so many social networking sites such as face book', orkut' and much more. On these sites we can find our old friends and also we make new friends and chat with them also.
5).Finally, the internet has leveraged the deployment of high speed networks which can provide quality of service (QOS). This is because the new internet application streaming audio or video are bandwidth extensive and require some minimum guarantees.
Overall, the growth of the internet and the growing popularity of application with ever increasing bandwidth requirements demand for higher inter browsing and downloading speed for the internet user. This, in turn, warrants that the underlying transport network be able to support such high speed of internet.
