So I'm in college and I'm studying electrical engineering. Yeait's boring. However, I recently learned about Tesla. He is (was) a pretty brilliant guy, and yet most people have never heard of him. While most people think that Thomas Edison invented electricity, he only invented direct current, while Telsa invented alternating current, which we still use to this dayHe also came up with the first radio.
Anyway, before I get really technical and all that, let me get to the point. So I learned about Tesla and all of his great inventions. He had an idea that in the future we would all have access to electricity wirelessly anywhere in an urban environment. He also came up with a lot of different inventions as to how to make electricity more efficient. If you saw the Prestige with Robert Downey Jr. then you'll know what I'm talking about.
So obviously the oil tycoons of the day didn't like him. He came up with a way to make cheap electricity, which means that they would soon be out of jobs. What good is oil if everyone can get energy for a lot less? So they bought all the patents to these ideas. And that was that.
I did some research on my own, and found this website. It's pretty cool. I'm not sure if it's Tesla's actual idea or not, but regardless it's brilliant. And easy. Easy is good. Who doesn't like free (or almost) electricity? In the video they say it takes about an hour to build. I built mine in 45 minutes ;) but then again, I'm going to be an electrical engineer.
I showed it to my parents and they have one now too. I think I might start charging to build these, as it's really easy to do and very worthwhile. My parents have been saving something like 50% of what they used to pay for their electricity and all they did was have me!
The reason I'm writing this article is because I hate big oil companies etc. The BP disaster gave everyone a conscience to some degree, but we still all drive our big trucks that are gas guzzlers. While this doesn't directly solve that problem, it's a start. Hope you like it!
