If you have a dance school and have a special performance coming up it can be difficult to costume your young dancers at a reasonable cost within a budget. You may well have several dance pieces to perform and costume and the money from the costume budget can soon be used up. You need to be creative and think of clever ideas to make the budget go further while still making an impact with your costumes. Making your own tutu is the ideal way to make a simple but effective costume as a reasonable price. You do not need the services of a seamstress to make a tutu. You can follow a few easy steps to come up with a nice tutu for your dancers in less than two hours. Your dancers may well enjoy the process of making their own tutu with individual and unique design ideas. Things you will need: 50 yards tulle, width of 6 inches Elastic Measuring tape/ yard stick 7/8 Satin ribbon in a color that matches with the tulle (optional) Scissors Stapler & staples (you can use liquid stitch 7/8 if you do not have a stapler) What to do: 1. Gather all the items mentioned above and place them conveniently in a central location. 2. Prepare the tulle for cutting. Measure the tulle for cutting at 20 inches length. After cutting your tulle, measure the elastic to the required size then cut it. You will need about fifty five 6" by 20" strips of tulle for a small size. If you need to make your tutu in a bigger size then make the strips larger since the larger the size the more the strips and the smaller the size the fewer the strips. 3. When you have the elastic in the required sizes, get your stapler and staple the elastic together. Check that the back of the staples is bent inwards to be sure that the elastic will be held together and in place. 4. Position the tulle in a "U" shape below the elastic. While you do this, try to keep the ends evenly and as close as possible to each other. They need not be perfect, they will still look good. 5. Lift the two upper portions of the tulle to shape "U" over the elastic. Pull them simultaneously underneath the curved bottom of the "U" shape to the start of a knot. This step should be repeated until all the elastic is covered and no part of it is visible after completion. If your tutu was to be multiple colored, all you need to do is to simply alternate the colors at this stage. 6. If you wish, you can decorate your tutu by adding a satin bow. This can be achieved with 48 inches of 7/8" satin ribbon. Tie the bow nicely arranging the streamers to drape stylishly on the tulle. Finally attach the bow to the by use of a clothespin to hold in place and leave it for 24 hours when you will remove the clothes pin and your tutus will be all set for wearing on stage at you recital.Once you have made your tutu it is a good idea to add sparkle, glitter and sequins to make a dazzling costume fit for any performance or dance competition. It is possible to make an animal themed tutu costume by adding wings for fairy or butterfly tutu costumes. Add a head dress which complements the theme of the outfit such as frog or bug eyes.
