Monophobia is the fear of being left alone. Many people will experience this at some point in their life and will be able to overcome it; however there are a good number of people that have a severe phobia of being alone and are unable to simply get over it. Once you start to actually see any of the signs that you could have this phobia, you should seek help.
Some of the most common signs of this problem are things such as being clingy -- if you start to feel like you are holding on too tightly to the person that you are in a relationship with, perhaps you should take a step back and think about why you are doing it. If you dread whenever the other person has to leave, of times when you are going to be alone, this is another sign. Many people feel dread and terror if they know that they are going to be left alone for any period of time.
People that suffer from this phobia also tend to do whatever it takes to keep from being left alone. That can also include threatening to harm themselves if they are left alone. Their fear of being alone is so strong that they can't stand it.
The earlier these signs are caught the better chance a person has of being able to try and head off the phobia before it gets too bad. The support of someone else can often times help with this and many times will make a difference if a person can get over this phobia.
