It is no secret that those suffering from obesity are more at risk of a host of illnesses and diseases owing to a general lack in their health, as well as a weaker immune system, as a result. These people require extra steps in both the prevention of and fighting of disease.
The scientific journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases published a revealing article and questioned whether obesity (body mass index [BMI] 30) and extreme obesity (BMI 40) were independent risk factors for death among case patients over 20 years old, with specific reference to the 2009 H1N1 virus. The study, of 534 adult patients, notes, "Half of Californians 20 years of age hospitalized with 2009 H1N1 infection were obese. Extreme obesity was associated with increased odds of death. Obese adults with 2009 H1N1 infection should be treated promptly and considered in prioritization of vaccine and antiviral medications during shortages."
Obese people need extra help to build their immune systems and current medical findings suggest three forms of protection vaccines (such as the HPV vaccine), antiviral medication (such as Tamiflu) and health supplements (such as Gene-Eden). All vulnerable groups, meaning, the young, old, pregnant and obese, should be stricter in ensuring to use at least one of these methods of protection.
A note to remember is that all medications come with side effects of some sort - some better and some worse and these should be looked into before beginning treatment. Health supplements, on the other hand, are more affordable than their medical counterparts, while also being natural, and not carrying unpleasant side effects.
