They are also a lot more responsible for the work they do before and after a job. In the past painters and decorators were not necessarily responsible for the work they carried out as it wasn't seen to be their job. Their job usually just involved painting an area that they were told to do. Nowadays painters and decorators are more responsible for what they do in their jobs. They are expected to prepare an area for painting, this could involve covering areas that weren't to be painted, masking up areas of walls, selecting and buying the paint. So as you can see painters today have a much more demanding job. After painting and decorating a painter and decorator is normally required to clear up after themselves, this will involve making sure the room looks like it did when they first arrived. Adding any finishing touches and basically getting out of the customers hair.

If you are thinking about becoming a painter and decorator there are a couple of routes you could choose from. Many painters and decorators will embark on an apprenticeship this type of learning allows students to gain valuable experience of the job and will also allow learners to earn money at the same time. Another option is for you to go to college and complete a course in painting and decorating, this shows future employers that you have the qualifications necessary and know what to do in the job. The only thing this wont give you is much work experience. However you may sometimes be placed in working environments to gain some experience whilst you're on the course.
