A Swedish analyst has claimed that recent weapon imports of India have surpassed China's and while India is on the wake of becoming a regional power in international arms, it also has won the title of being the world's largest weapons importer.
South Asian analyst Rahul Bedi comments with reference to London-based Jane's Defense Weekly in the words, "To become a big boy, you need to project your power". If this is the sole cause for India's projecting its power behind increasing international arms imports, then it must take into account the fact that a boy cannot be considered big if he is starved and is living in penury? How could a nation expect to become big with capitalism on the rampage on the threshold of power? Where India is well known for having one of the richest tycoons according to Forbes, as well as one of the poorest!
India where more than half of the population lives below poverty line of less than a dollar per day and where inflation has sum up in increasing poverty and unemployment, it does not appear feasible to spend billions and trillions of dollars to modernize its fighter jets and aircrafts.
According to Breitbart, "British Prime Minister David Cameron's July visit, heeded the two countries to announce a nearly $1.1 billion deal for India to buy 57 Hawk advanced trainer jets. During President Barack Obama's November visit, a $4.1 billion sale of 10 C-17 transport aircraft was announced." If this is the criteria of how India is projecting power, how would India be able to justify its poverty that every year doubles faster than its population? Being one of the largest weapon icons do not promise food and shelter to the poor and homeless citizens, India must be realistic in projecting its power!
India, no doubt, is in the race of becoming a global international power, but to what extent that power could promise economic well heeling and prosperity, is what India must prioritize at this moment, rather than to run after the arms race! After all three wars with the neighborhood have never granted India the economic prosperity it always wished for, and even if it promised, wars are only destined to bring destruction!
