So, you've made the decision to buy a Flokati rug. You buy it, and it comes with a few issues, and you don't quite know what to do. Here are some common problems when you first buy your Flokati rug and what to do about them.
If the woollen fibers on your Flokati rug are flat and not fluffy
Flokati rugs are supposed to be think and plush, and not flat and drab. When you get your Flokati rug, it may have become flattened in the packaging.
Take it outside and give it a good shake. That should help the woollen fibres get fluffier and remove any dust. If this still hasn't helped your Flokati rug into looking thick and plush, get an ordinary garden rake. Gently rake the wool from the bottom of the woollen fibers to the top.
You may notice that some of the woollen fibers get stuck in the rake and come off. Don't worry. That is normal. If you do this gently, you won't harm your Flokati rug.
If your Flokati rug sheds a bit
If you've just bought your Flokati rug, you may notice that it sheds a bit. Take it outside and give it a shake. After this, brush your Flokati rug with a soft bristled brush. You will notice some of the woollen fibers coming off and getting stuck in the brush. That is normal.
This should help to substantially reduce, if not stop, the shedding from your Flokati rug.
If you notice that your Flokati rug is still shedding a lot, give it a wash. If it is a small Flokati rug, you can wash it in the washing machine. Wash it on the gentle cycle using a mild detergent and cold water. Remember, your Flokati rug is made of wool. Don't use bleach. Use the same detergent as you would for woollen clothes.
If you have a big Flokati rug that doesn't fit into your washing machine, take it outside. Get a small scrub brush, dip the scrub brush in cold or lukewarm water which has been mixed with mild detergent. Then give your Flokati rug a gentle brush from the centre to the outsides of the rug.
You may notice some of the woollen fibers coming getting stuck in the brush, and that is perfectly normal. Then put your Flokati rug outside in the shade to dry. The sun can discolor woollen fibers.
Give your Flokati rug another shake and brush.
The Flokati rug should stop shedding after shaking, brushing, and washing it.
