Living In An Apartment On The Upper West Side

Bordered by the Hudson River and Central Park on the west and east respectively, the Upper West Side of New York is one of the most desirable addresses in the city. That does not mean however, that you cannot find low, or at least medium-rent Upper West Side apartments, it just means you may have to look a little harder. It's a great location to live in if you are a fan of the arts, with the Lincoln Center sprawled between 62nd and 66th Streets and comprising such institutions as the Lincoln Center for performing Arts, The Julliard School, The Metropolitan Opera, The New York City Ballet and The New York Philharmonic. However, those of a scientific bent of mind will hardly be left without things to do, what with the American Museum of Natural History located in the area. The many exhibits here will leave you captivated, and periodic special exhibits will have you coming back here over and over again, thanking your stars you found an Upper West Side apartment. The New York Historical Society and the Nicholas Roerich Museum are the other museums in this region. The area is mostly populated with middle or upper-middle class residents, with young executives and college students moving in and out regularly. One amazing feature of the Upper West Side area is the racial diversity, with people from many different countries and cultures populating the area. This has led to the place being affectionately dubbed as "The People's Republic of the Upper West Side". The region is well connected to the rest of the city with many bus routes as well as subway lines. The 1 local train and 2 and 3 express trains are the primary modes of transport for many professionals who live here. The A, B, C and D lines also serve the area, running under Central Park West. Other than these attractions, the area is well stocked with bookshops, cinema halls and restaurants to satisfy even the sternest critic. A mix of elegant taste and sturdy middle-class sentiment is what gives this region its unique flavor and has made it such a favorite for many. People looking for Upper West Side apartments have to move quickly however, as this is one of the most desirable addresses in the city and apartments are taken up almost the instant they come into the market. While expensive, there are ways to get an apartment at prices you can afford. For example, pensioner Dorothy Williamson recently got an apartment here at just $99 a week. While you will perhaps not be that lucky, be on the lookout. You never know what you find.
