Leveling a hunter in World of Warcraft can be very fun. They have a nice array of abilities that make soloing easy, while having a pet will allow you to escape situations that would kill other classes. Learning how to play a hunter takes time and a bit of practice, but if you can master the class you will become a valued member of any group. Before that can happen you need to know how to level one quickly.
Pet Choice
Choosing a pet is one of the hardest things a leveling hunter must do. You need a pet that can keep aggro off of you, but you also want it to be able to do some serious damage. With these things in mind here are some solid options.
Cats, Raptors, and Ravagers
These are some of the best overall pet choices for the game. Being Ferocity pets, they do solid amounts of damage and in doing so can keep a mob's attention quite well. These pets are generally also decent choices for PvP play if you decide to chose to level in the Battlegrounds.
You may decide that you would rather have a boar, wolf, or maybe even a different choice. Many of these pets can tank for you just fine, you just need to be mindful that they bring a different set of abilities to the table as well.
Leveling Spec
For most hunters there is only one choice and that is Beast Mastery. BM spec generally helps buff your pets while giving you some fantastic supporting abilities. The talent tree ends with an ability that allows you to tame some more exotic pets, such as the devilsaurs.
There are quite a few abilities that lend themselves well to soloing such as Spirit Link and Bestial Wrath. These skills will help you by regenerating health and help you kill things much quicker.
You shouldn't neglect the group abilities like Ferocious Inspiration. These abilities will give your party a buff which will speed up your instance runs considerably.
Pet and Trap Management
Being able to control your pets and traps is what separates a bad hunter from the good ones. It is important that you master these two aspects in order to make yourself more highly desired. There is no shortage of poorly played hunters in the game. Being able to do these things will make yourself stand out from the crowd.
There is a lot more to the class, but this is a great place to start. With the proper pet and leveling spec you will find it really easy to level while proper pet and trap management will make you more desirable for groups. Putting these things together will make you a leveling beast.
