subject: Windows Security Essentials [print this page]

If you're looking for an antivirus solution for your Windows PC, then you needn't look further than the free new offering from Microsoft called Security Essentials.

Antivirus are the first thing you should install after you get a new computer, in order to ensure that protected from as early as possible. With Windows Security Essentials you now have the option of getting a light antivirus solution from Microsoft itself, and at no additional cost.

Despite being a free antivirus, it is quite a good offering my Microsoft, and if you don't want to look far and wide for the perfect antivirus solution then this might suffice. The best thing about it is that it uses very few of your computers resources making it ideal if you are running an older computer or a low powered computer.

Available for download from the Microsoft Security Essentials website, the software is rather small, a mere 4 to 9MB download depending on OS version, and installs quickly without requiring a restart. It offers a simple easy to use interface and easy to use update mechanism, and mostly stays out of your way unless it finds a threat.

If you are already using a free antivirus solution or a paid solution though, there is not much to gain from switching to Microsoft Security Essentials, as it offers no special protection over other solutions.
