Since the Biblical times the mandate of God of spreading the gospel has existed. Street
Preaching which also known as open air is preaching is a form of evangelism. It is preaching outside of a church the Word of God in public arena to those who would never set foot in a church. Open-air preachers or street preachers are the name given to those engaged in street preaching. The areas open to general public such as market place, public streets, sidewalks, public parks or other crowded areas are usually selected.
Jesus preached in the streets and other public areas. In the Gospel of Mark 1:15 the street preacher John the Baptist was thrown into prison for stating Herod's adultery with his brother's wife Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Gaililee,preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. As he did so, "great multitudes were gathered unto him and he spoke many things unto them." Mathew-13; 2-3.It is the great commandment which Jesus gave to his disciples. We find in Mathew 28-19 "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Street preaching is good method for preaching .In street preaching the points we have to consider are audibility.
The public attendance is very important. Our speech must be short and informative. In the Old Testament we find a street preacher named Jonah. He was instructed be God, "Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. Those who were engaged in street preaching throughout the history underwent great turmoil. Street preaching "were continued faithfully by the preachers due to the love of the Word.
We can recollect the works of many preachers throughout the world. In the mid-1700"a preacher named George Whitefield went throughout America and England. He focused on people who did not attend church and did street preaching in parks and fields. John Wesley is known for his sermons which captured every soul. Jonathan Edwardsexclaimed"Sinnes in the Hands of as Angry God". William Booth Is the founder of the Salvation Army and he began his preaching from the age of 23 in the streets of England. Charles Spurgeon and D.L.Moody are other famous street preachers. History reminds us how Gospel was preached and made known. It is our prime duty to preach the gospel and street preaching is a major key to it.
The church aims to bring the lost and burden laden souls to the bosom of Gospel. In the book of Romans 10-13-17 tells us "For Whosoever call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they are sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things. But they have not all obeyed the Gospel"
