Historical information about the Mane Nobiscum Domine in Rome

Ten years ago, in Tertio Millennium adveniente (November 10, 1994), I had the joy of proposing to the Church as we prepare for the Jubilee Year 2000. I felt that this historic opportunity presented itself as a great grace. I realized, of course, that a simple chronological event, however evocative, could not by itself bring about great changes. The facts, unfortunately, you are instructed to highlight, after the start of the Millennium, a kind of tragic continuity with previous events, and often with its worst aspects. It has thus taken shape a scenario that, in addition to comforting perspective, suggests dark shadows of violence and bloodshed which cause continued concern. But inviting the Church to celebrate the Jubilee of the Incarnation two thousand years, I was convinced - and still are more than ever - to work for the "long term".Christ is the center not only of the history of the Church, but also the history of mankind. He sums up in everything (cf. Eph 1:10, Col 1:15 - 20).

How can we forget the enthusiasm with which the Second Vatican Council, quoting Pope Paul VI, proclaimed that Christ is "the goal of human history, the focal point of the longings of history and civilization, the center of mankind, the joy of 'every heart, the fullness of their aspirations "(1)? The teaching of the Council added depth to our understanding of the nature of the Church, and gave believers a clearer insight into the mysteries of faith and of the same ground reality in the light of Christ. In Him, the Word made flesh, has demonstrated not only the mystery of God, but the mystery man. (2) In him, humanity finds redemption and fulfillment.7. In the Encyclical Redemptor Hominis, at the beginning of my Pontificate, I developed this theme extensively, which I then incorporated in various other circumstances. The Jubilee was a fitting time to invite the attention of believers on this fundamental truth. The preparation of the great event was fully Trinitarian and Christocentric. In this setting, could not be the Eucharist. If today we prepare to celebrate Year of the Eucharist, recall with pleasure that already in Tertio Millennium adveniente writes: "Two thousand a year will be intensely Eucharistic: in the sacrament of the Eucharist the Saviour, who took flesh in Mary's womb twenty centuries ago, continues to offer himself to humanity as a source of divine life. "(3)

The International Eucharistic Congress, held in Rome, also helped focus attention on this aspect of the Great Jubilee. Mette also worth recalling that, in preparation for the Jubilee, in the Apostolic Letter Dies Domini believers to meditate the theme of Sunday as the day of the Risen Lord and the Church's special day. I urged everyone to rediscover the celebration of Sunday Eucharist as the heart (4).Contemplating with Mary the face of Christ8. The legacy of the Great Jubilee were collected in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte. In this programmatic document, I suggested an ever greater pastoral engagement based on the contemplation of Christ's face, in an ecclesial pedagogy aimed at "the high standard of holiness, carried out especially through the art of prayer (5). And how could he fail in this perspective, commitment to the liturgy and, in particular, the attention to the Eucharistic life? I wrote: "In the twentieth century, especially since the Council, the Christian community has grown much in the way of celebrating the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Necessary to continue in this direction, emphasizing the Sunday Eucharist and Sunday itself experienced as a special day of faith, the day of the Risen Lord and the gift of the Spirit, the true weekly Easter ". (6)

In the context of a training prayer, I recommended to cultivate the Liturgy of the Hours, by which the Church sanctifies the different times of day and the passage of time through the liturgical year.9. Later, with the proclamation of the Year of the Rosary and the publication of the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, I returned to the theme of contemplating the face of Christ from the perspective of Mary, through the re-proposal of the Rosary. In fact, this traditional prayer, so highly recommended by the Magisterium and so dear to the People of God, has a markedly biblical and evangelical character, focused on the name and the face of Jesus as contemplated in the mysteries and by the repetition of the Hail Mary. His repetitive pattern is a sort of pedagogy of love, to turn the same spirit of love that Mary bore her Son. For this reason, leading to further growth a centuries-old tradition, I wanted to make this privileged form of contemplation of his features complete "compendium of the Gospel" integrating into the mysteries of light. (7) And how could, at the top of the mysteries of , the Holy Eucharist?
