Just like any other sports, softball is a sport that also requires warm-up, which is also known as softball conditioning. This is much needed especially when doing some explosive drills such as batting, base running, pitching, and quick fielding. Softball conditioning exercises should be concentrated on developing power. This is to improve the staying power and strength of a player. And then it is to be followed by enhancing the player's speed, power, and quickness.
Explosive movements are required in power training for softball conditioning exercises. It would also be useful if you can make use of medicine balls and kettle bells. These power trainings would require you to spend 5-8 reps of 2-3 sets of 30-60 seconds rest in between sets.
Below are power trainings for softball conditioning exercise that can be performed in the gym:
1. Squatting with front raise begin this exercise with a wide stance and at the same time hold a weighted plate or dumbbell in between your legs. Make a deep squat till your thighs are parallel to the floor. But make sure that you keep your weight down, and then explode upward as you raise your arms in front of you. Then repeat the deep squat.
2. Med ball Upper-Body Shuffles this is to be performed by means of a push up while a med ball is under one hand. Then regular push-up exercise is performed with the chest reaching the floor. However, when doing the push up exercise, you will need to roll the med ball to your other hand.
3. Med ball overhand toss from a crunch pose this is performed by lying down with your knees elevated while your feet remain flat on the floor and a med ball is placed above your head with your arm extended. With ball above your head, perform a regular sit up. And as you go up, pass the ball to your partner. Your partner should toss back the ball above your head while you return to your original position.
4. Russian twist med ball throw with your feet above the floor, begin with an upright crunch position. With a med ball, place hands at one side and then ask your partner to stand on the opposite side. Start the exercise on twisting torso heading to your partner and releasing the ball. Then as you return to your original position, your partner will toss the ball back.
5. Lateral twist on physio ball this is performed by lying on a physio ball positioned on your upper back. With your feet on the floor as supports, you will have to lift up your lower back and thigh parallel to the floor. Together with your two arms, begin on a prayer like pose in front of your chest. Then rotate all the way to one side as your shoulder rests on the ball while keeping your balance. Afterwards, do the same movement on the other side. You can increase the level of difficulty by holding a weighted ball.
