Quatar Airways to withdraw from Gatwick Airport

One of the Middle East's leading airlines Quatar Airways has this week announced its intention to withdraw its services from Gatwick Airport as from 31st May of this year.

Gulf airline Quatar Airways, which is based at the Quatar Airways Tower in the capital city, Doha, has announced plans this week to withdraw its operations from Gatwick Airport for commercial reasons'.

The airline plans to use the extra capacity to add an additional daily flight to the Gulf from Manchester Airport instead, leaving current capacity at Heathrow intact for the time being.

Serving over 95 destinations worldwide

Quatar Airways currently links over 95 international destinations from its base in Doha, using a fleet of 96 aircraft. Heavily weighted towards the luxury travel market, it's one of only seven airlines worldwide to be awarded a 5-star rating by Skytrax along with Cathay Pacific, Asiana Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Hainan Airlines, and Kingfisher Airlines.

Qatar Airways operates services across Africa, Central Asia, Europe, Far East, Indian subcontinent, Middle East, North America, South America and Oceania.

Route no longer sustainable

When asked about the move, Qatar Airways' CEO Akbar Al Baker said: "We are extremely sad to be losing London Gatwick from our network after serving the route for the past seven years."

"But following a thorough review and analysis over the past few months, we have concluded that we could no longer sustain the route for commercial reasons."

"While we continue to grow our business, developing the network further, we do it prudently, cautiously and carefully."
